A Bad Case of the Stripes

This project was done with Junior Campers in art! After reading the book, A Bad Case of the Stripes by David Shannon, we expressed our individuality. Using pre-made figure stencils, the students traced the figure and then depicted a different pattern on each part of the body with crayons. Each one different from the other! The kids didn't have to worry about being confined to the lines as we cut them out after they were completely colored! Cool, 1-Day project with emphasis one character building!

Circle Drawing

I did this project with Junior campers at summer camp. It was a challenge with the little guys, but kindergarten and up, no problem!

The students were given crayons and colored pencils, and different items to trace circles with (we used Dixie cups, styrofoam bowls, and small souffle cups. We talked about overlapping and how doing so created new shapes. Each shape was colored a different color than the one touching it. Afterwards students could go over their circles with black marker!

This could be great on big paper for middle school or high school. Different shapes could be used... Students could choose an object like a pair of scissors or a glue bottle, trace it, and do the same thing.

Or even a great project to put in your sub folder!

Crumpled tissue paper US Flag

In Junior Art at Summer Camp, we showed our patriotism in observance of The Fourth of July! On Xerox paper we created/copied a template. Then we cut red, white, and blue tissue paper into smaller, more manageable squares. The kiddos crumpled and glued the tissue paper in place. Then they added a little bit of flare with silver stars! Great project! The kids loved it and the Xerox paper held up perfectly once the glue dried!

Robots

Made from toilet paper rolls and other found objects. The students brainstormed on how they wanted their robots to look. We painted them silver or gold on the first day and then put them on the drying table. Then they turned to the worksheet to plan their robots. The robots were dry by the second day. They used Elmer's glue to attach everything.

Hand print bees

Junior Kindergarten summer camp project. The kids loved it. We created Circle stencils for the bees heads. The children traced the circles on yellow paper and cut them out. Then they worked on the face. We set up a paint station in the front of the room. Table by table the children were called to the paint station. The art teacher paints yellow and black stripes on the child's hand and creates a print on white paper. Doing it this way kept the kids busy the entire time and required very little clean up!

Candy Drawings

On black paper, using Prisma Color colored pencils, students drew candy color field drawings from observation. There were 9 still-lifes created by hot gluing candy to a piece of Bristol Board and numbering them. I numbered them so that they could be checked out each class and there is record of which students were using what still-life. This was done in a high school drawing 1 class. It made it easier to remind the students that the candy forms were all forms they already knew how to draw mostly being different spheres and cylinders. I did the project with two students working from each still-life. Be sure to give them a piece of hard candy every once in a while when their working well!
